Practice Experience:

Law Clerk for Chief Justice, Oregon Supreme Court 1957-1959; private practice Portland, Oregon 1959-1962; District Attorney, Multnomah County 1962-1970; Circuit Judge, Department of Domestic Relations, 4th Judicial District, Oregon 1973-1978; Circuit Judge, General Trial Department, 4th Judicial District, Oregon 1978-1981; Judge, Oregon Court of Appeals 1981-1988; Associate Justice, Oregon Supreme Court 1988-2001.

 

Professional Activities:

Justice Van Hoomissen was Dean of National College of District Attorneys and Professor of Law, University of Houston School of Law.  He was Adjunct Professor at Northwestern School of Law (Criminal Law and Procedure, Legal Ethics and Professional Responsibility), Willamette University School of Law (State Constitutional Law) and Portland State University (Department of Criminal Justice).  Justice Van Hoomissen is on the Board of Directors at the Oregon Law Institute and is a member of Owen M. Panner American Inns of Court (Master).

 

Justice Van Hoomissen was a State Representative, Multnomah County for two terms in 1959-1962.  During that time he was Chairman, House Judiciary Committee.

 

Justice Van Hoomissen is a Founding Member of the Oregon Academy of Family Law Practitioners and is listed in Who’s Who in America (2006 ed); Who’s Who in American Law (2006 ed).  He is past president of the Oregon Appellate Judges Association, Oregon District Attorneys Association and the Federal Bar Association (Oregon Chapter).

 

Mediation Experience:

Justice Van Hoomissen has been associated with the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section, Oregon State Bar; the Dispute Resolution Committee, Oregon Judicial Conference; Dispute Resolution Section, American Bar Association and the Family Law Section of the American Bar Association and the Oregon State Bar.  He has over 150 hours in Dispute Resolution training from Harvard Law School, National Judicial College, Willamette University College of Law, and University of Washington School of Law.
