BETTY ROBERTS

Practice Experience:

Judge Roberts was in private practice as a partner in Skelton & Roberts, from 1967 - 1977.  She was a member of the Oregon House of Representatives (1965-1969) and an Oregon State Senator (1969-1977).

 

Judge Roberts served on the Oregon State Court of Appeals from 1977 - 1982, and on the Oregon Supreme Court from 1982 - 1986.

 

Professional Activities:

Since retiring from the Supreme Court, Judge Roberts has been actively involved in mediating and arbitrating.  She has spoken on the use of ADR for insurance companies and attorneys, and has participated in CLE workshops and seminars.

 

She has been on the Board of Directors for the Metropolitan Public Defender.  She served as a Pro Tem Settlement Conference Judge, and as a visiting professor at Oregon State University (Dubach Endowed Chair in Political Science).  Judge Roberts received the 1986 Oregon State Bar Award of Merit.  She is a member of Oregon Judicial Conference, Senior Judges Association, Oregon State Bar, has served on the Oregon Women Lawyers Foundation Board and Northwestern School of Law, Lewis and Clark College Alumni Board.

 

ADR Background:

Co-presenter, "Mediating the Basic Automobile Injury Case" Oregon Law Institute (1999), Panel member on "Real Lawyers Mediate," at Oregon Trial Lawyers Conference (1998), Judge Roberts has conducted mock mediation training sessions for USA&M's new claims representative training seminars, and participated in US Arbitration and  Mediation CLE "Mediating the Complex Commercial, Employment, Oregon Tort Cases", Oregon State Bar CLE "Settlement Conferences: The Judge's Role in Facilitating Settlement of Disputes",  Oregon State Bar CLE "Strategies for Successful Negotiation", Willamette University Dispute Resolution Conference.

 

In the past 12 years Judge Roberts has successfully mediated cases involving a wide variety of issues, including personal injuries, medical malpractice, employment, commercial billing disputes, construction problems contract disputes, legal malpractice, product liability, and real estate issues.
